Shop Props

Shopping for gym or workout props and equipment can be overwhelming. There are so many different types of brands, sizes, and materials that can make the decision making so much more confusing. To make things slightly easier, I've gathered all of my props recommendations I believe will help you in your flexibility journey in one place.

Mats

First, I want to start with the mat. Personally, I like using a yoga mat that is not too thick but also not too thin where you can feel the floor. It is more comfortable using a mat for padding, but also not to roll in the dirt of the floor, grass, or any other surface. The price range will depend on the quality and brand, which again, everyone has has a different preference.

Straps

Straps are great for exercising at home or at the gym, and can be used for strength, resistance, and flexibility training. When I started using straps, I was overwhelmed by all the different types that were out there, so I wanted to make it easier for you by explaining the use of each one listed here:

Yoga/Pilates Strap Belt :

This strap is usually made out of cotton and has a buckle on one end to create a loop. It does not stretch which can make it good or uncomfortable for certain exercises. It is great to use when working on flexibility and stretching since it doesn't change its length and can help reach further more easily. The loop is adjustable which is very convenient to make it fit the size of the body part you are using. Use this to practice poses where you are not quite there yet or some resistance exercises of push and pull.

Fabric Resistance Bands:

These resistance bands are narrow and have different stretch/ resistance levels. Usually they are sold in a bundle of 3+ so you can play around with the intensities. They are great for strength and resistance training if you are not a huge fan of weights, or you can use them while using weights to make your training even harder. I don't normally use this type when stretching, but you might find a creative way that works for you:)

Pull Up Resistance Bands:

Pull up resistance bands are a great prop to create resistance in strength and flexibility training. Like the fabric resistance bands, they can be used as a substitute to weights or an addition to. The bands are made of rubber which makes them very stretchy, and are usually sold in bundles of different resistance levels.

I love using these for mobility and flexibility training due to its resistance that helps reach further. These are often used in callisthenics training to train the body to lift and hold itself in the air.

Blocks

I used to underestimate the purpose of blocks and insist on doing it myself, but actually, the blocks can help you stay in the right posture of a pose even when your flexibility is not quite there yet. Blocks are used a lot to reach the floor, sit on it, or as an assistance to get into complexed poses.

There are different types of blocks, usually made of cork or foam. The cork blocks are harder and don't change their shape whereas the foam blocks are softer and can change their shape depending on the weight put on it. This comes down to preference so I would recommend trying both to know which one you like.

Foam Roller

This is a must have in your sporty collection!! It can be used for different purposes and can help relief pain. I tend to use the foam roller before a workout (especially when sore), during, and after a workout. The foam roller can add some spice to your workout and make them slightly more challenging by trying to keep your balance during the exercise. Like the other props, the foam roller is made from different materials which make it harder or softer to use. Again, try different ones to know what your preference is. Personally, I prefer the harder ones because they feel more stable and have more of an impact on my muscles.

Yoga Wheel

The yoga wheel is a good way to work on back bends and shoulder opening. It can help release the spine and can be used as a gentle massage for the back. When practicing more complex positions like chest stands, it can support you to get into the position, due to its shape and ease of movement. On the other hand, it's important to be careful because of its movement and keep your balance to not fall off.

I love using the wheel for practicing advanced moves and a massage my back when really tight.
